Where Williamsburg slip-and-fall cases happen

North Williamsburg, between Bedford Avenue and Kent Avenue, produces the highest volume of fall claims tied to the bar and restaurant scene and the continuous high-rise development along the waterfront. Falls outside bars on Bedford Avenue and Berry Street are common, often involving icy untreated sidewalks in winter, raised storefront thresholds, or wet entryway tile inside the establishment. Construction-adjacent sidewalk falls along Kent Avenue are also a steady stream, with the responsible parties spanning the property owner, the general contractor, and any relevant subcontractor.

South Williamsburg, the Hasidic core south of Division Avenue, produces a different case profile. Lee Avenue and the side streets generate stairwell falls in older multi-family housing, sidewalk falls outside the dense storefront strip, and a notable volume of stroller-pedestrian sidewalk incidents tied to the high birth rate and constant family foot traffic. Insurance coverage analysis here can be more complicated because some of the buildings are owned by religious institutions or by family LLCs with non-standard policy structures.

East Williamsburg, including the Metropolitan Avenue and Bushwick Avenue corridors, produces truck-related sidewalk falls (the area is on a heavy truck route) and warehouse-conversion residential falls in older industrial buildings now used as housing. The Williamsburg Bridge bike path approach on the Manhattan side and on Berry/Bedford on the Brooklyn side produces a separate cluster of cyclist falls and pedestrian-cyclist conflict cases that can sometimes overlap with sidewalk-defect claims.

NYC sidewalk law and adjacent property owner liability

NYC Administrative Code § 7-210 makes the owner of the property abutting the public sidewalk responsible for keeping it in reasonably safe condition. In Williamsburg, that means the apartment-building owner, the commercial-bar/restaurant owner, the new tower LLC, or the family-trust ownership of a multi-family building. The City of New York is generally not the right defendant for a Williamsburg sidewalk fall.

Owner-occupied one- and two-family homes remain under City responsibility, which matters more in the residential blocks east of Union Avenue. Tree-pit defects and certain City hardware stay City-liable. Utility-owned grates shift liability to the utility company, NYC Water, or Verizon.

For falls on MTA property at Bedford Avenue, Marcy Avenue, Lorimer Street, Hewes Street, or any other Williamsburg station, General Municipal Law § 50-e requires a Notice of Claim within 90 days. Lawsuit within one year and 90 days. NYCHA falls (Williamsburg Houses) and NYC park falls (Domino Park is privately maintained but immediately adjacent to public property, McCarren Park further north) follow the same 90-day rule when the City or City-related entity is a defendant.

What to do after a slip-fall in Williamsburg

1. Get medical attention. Woodhull Medical Center is the primary public ER for the area. NewYork-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist further south is an alternative for non-emergency follow-up.
2. Photograph the hazard, the surroundings, the construction site if relevant, and your injuries. Bars and restaurants often clean up a wet floor immediately, so getting the photo before they wipe is critical.
3. Get witness contact information. The bartender, the doorman, the rideshare driver who saw it.
4. Report the fall to the bar manager, building super, or general contractor. Ask for the incident report.
