Fatal crashes are down 4% during the first 11 months of 2010 the National Safety Council is reporting. The report has our New York City accident attorneys wondering if New York has contributed to this factor since the preliminary reports are incomplete for the state at this time.
Though the NCS did not report specific figures for New York, their findings did include neighboring states of New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Connecticut.
New Jersey’s results were only included for 5 months of 2010 which indicated a 9% decrease in traffic fatalities from 2009 to 2010 and a 5% decrease from 2008 to 2010.
Pennsylvania had a 4% increase in traffic deaths during the first 11 month period of 2009 but a 1% decrease for the 2008 – 2010 time period. Connecticut had an overwhelming 34% increase in motor vehicle deaths during the months of January-November from 2009 to 2010 which was the highest reported change of any state during that time period.
There was a 1% increase from 2008 to 2010 during the months of January-November.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that New York reported 680 passenger vehicles involved in fatal crashes in 2008. This number is supported by the increase in passenger vehicle registrations over the last several years. According to the NSC, the estimated annual population death rate is 11.2 deaths per 100,000 people. This warrants an approximate increase of 4% from 2009.
Nationwide, there were 31,740 traffic deaths from January to November 2010; this was a 4% decrease from that same time frame in 2009 and a 13% decrease from the first 11 months in 2008.
Medically consulted injury instead of disabling injury is now being used by NSC as a measure for nonfatal injuries from motor vehicle accidents. Over 3.1 million people sought medical treatment from injuries sustained in car crashes. The estimated cost of property damage, death and injury from traffic accidents was over $216 billion, which is a 12% increase from 2009.
Such costs are too often shouldered by accident victims. Consulting an experienced attorney can help protect your rights and the financial well-being of you and your family.
